Does Mastitis signal the end of breastfeeding?

Lactation mastitis can be so severe that it leads to cessation of breastfeeding, which could ultimately deter delivery of optimal nutrition to the infant. Preventive measures for mastitis have been studied and, since incomplete milk emptying is one of the more common causes, improving breastfeeding techniques has been thought to reduce its incidence. Early recognition of signs and symptoms followed by prompt intervention may help prevent progression to more complicated infection and thereby potentially safeguard breastfeeding practices.
